From Solder to Student

Join us for a viewing of the documentary film “From Soldier to Student,” a film from director Jake Rademacher which follows him as he tries to understand the experience of his two brothers serving in Iraq and the challenges they face once they return home from war.  Following the film, Josh Hoke, president of the UK Veterans’ Association, and Dr. Robert Mock, VP for Student Affairs, will speak about their experiences as military veterans.  This event will take place at 7:00pm in Worsham Theater.

Tickets are on sale at the Student Center Ticket Office! Students will be able to present up to four additional valid UK student IDs to purchase a total of 5 student tickets during the student-only sale.  Student will be able to purchase general public tickets with their student ID beginning Wednesday, February 15, 2012.  There is a limit of 4 general public tickets per student ID.  The closed sale will conclude on Wednesday, February 22, 2012.  Tickets will go on sale for the general public beginning Thursday, February 23, 2012 through Ticketmaster and at the Student Center Ticket Office. Past events include presentations by PostSecret author Frank Warren as well as Bravo’s Project Runway winner, Christian Siriano. The Rasdall Gallery, located in the Student Center, has housed several amazing exhibits brought to you by this committee, like The Art of the Brick Lego!

University of Kentucky alumni Nick Baute and Robert Ronk prove that Print’s Not Dead with their letterpress shop Hound Dog Press in Louisville, KY.   The exhibit “Print’s Not Dead: An Exhibit of Letterpress” will be on display starting February 9  until March 1 in the Rasdall Gallery.

Religion. Sex. Politics. War. Drugs. Nothing is too taboo for the Engaging Issues Committee. This committee brings best-selling authors, experts, activists, educators and everyday people to open up an unknown world of information.

In September 2010, in response to the numerous acts of suicides by young people bullied for their sexual orientation, Dan Savage founded the "It Gets Better" Campaign as a way to let young LGBT people know that there is hope, help, and a future despite any hardships. Dan is coming to speak about how the mission of the “It Gets Better” Project is still crucially important even on our own campus. A Q&A session will follow the lecture as well as a book signing. The event will take place at 7:00pm in Memorial Hall. Tickets are available now at the Student Center Ticket Office. This event is free to UK students, faculty, staff and the general public.

Reverend Alphonso Petway, a member of the Freedom Riders, a courageous group of civil rights activists that traveled to segregated cities across the south to promote integration, will speak about his experiences as a freedom rider during the 1960s.  This event is free to all UK faculty, staff and students and the general public. Sponsored by the Student Activities Board and the Mu Epsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

The Traditions Committee brings to life the annual UK Homecoming Celebration. The week’s events include the banner and float competitions, 5K walk/run, philanthropic events, and the annual Homecoming game with the Mr. and Ms. UK celebration. Packed full of Wildcat pride and UK spirit, the Traditions Committee is also tasked with planning the annual Little Kentucky Derby Festival in the spring.

Apply TODAY to be on the SAB Board of Directors

The Student Activities Board (SAB) is currently accepting applications for the Board of Directors (BOD) for the 2012-2013 school year.  If you are a passionate team player, full of fresh ideas and a desire to transform the college experience for the students here at UK, then SAB is the place for you!

The 17 SAB Directors plan and execute more than 50 events on campus each semester including everything from large concerts like My Morning Jacket and Drake, to large campus events like Campus Ruckus, Midnight Finals Crunch Brunch and Homecoming, to smaller events like Farmer's MarCat, Karaoke Nights and the James Baker Hall Writer Series.  If you are creative, passionate, hardworking and want to bring exciting events to campus you are highly encouraged to apply.  No prior involvement in the organization is necessary!  

The Executive Team positions available are President, Vice President of Promotions, and Vice President of Internal Affairs. The Executive Team helps determine the direction of the organization and oversees its daily operations.  These intensive positions are some of the highest leadership positions available to students on campus.  Applying for the Executive Team does not require a letter of recommendation, but it is encouraged.

The programming director applications that are available are Campus Life, Cinema, Concerts, Cultural Arts, Engaging Issues, Multicultural Affairs, Pop Culture, Traditions, and SAB in the Halls.  Programming directors are in charge of planning and executing university events alongside their committee chairs and members. 

SAB is also looking for directors in Information Technology, Public Relations, Market Research and Graphic Design, along with an opening for an Assistant Director of Graphic Design.  Each of these skills-based directorships have the potential to provide internship credit and will also allow you to build pieces that can add to a professional portfolio.

SAB New & Returning Chairs Orientation

The Student Activities Board has recently welcomed 52 fresh new members to the board! This past Friday new and returning committee chairs and SAB in the Hall Representatives gathered in the Office of Student Involvement for an orientation and overview of life on SAB.

Cheap Seats is BACK!

Are you bummed you missed a recent blockbuster in theaters this summer? Well, you are in luck!  SAB's Cheap Seats series will be showing a number of these hit films on the big screen throughout the semester.  Cheap Seats is our long running movie series that brings new releases to students for only $1.  The series runs most Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 8:00pm in Worsham Theater in the Student Center.  

The Cheap Seats schedule for this semester is as follows:

  • September 27 & 28:  Bad Teacher
  • October 11 & 12:  Transformers: Dark of the Moon
  • October 25 & 26:  Horrible Bosses
  • November 16:  Captain America (starts at 9:00pm)
  • November 29 & 30:  The Help
